Amy McGrath is a former Marine fighter pilot turned commercial actress. She is best known for her political campaign commercials that aired during the 2020 election cycle, in which she unsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Mitch McConnell in her home state of Kentucky.
McGrath was born on June 3, 1975, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1997 and went on to become the first female Marine Corps fighter pilot. During her twenty years of service, she flew more than 2,000 hours in combat and was awarded several honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After retiring from the military in 2017, McGrath turned her attention to politics. In 2018, she made headlines when she launched a bid for Congress in Kentucky's 6th congressional district as a Democrat. Though she ultimately lost the race, her campaign was notable for its emphasis on her military background and dedication to public service.
McGrath gained even more national attention in 2020 when she announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by Mitch McConnell. Her campaign commercials, which showed her in her military uniform and focused on her service to her country, quickly went viral and helped her raise millions of dollars in donations.
However, despite her popularity and impressive credentials, McGrath ultimately lost the race to McConnell in the general election. Despite this setback, she remains a well-respected figure in both the military and political arenas, and her commercials have become iconic examples of effective political advertising. Today, McGrath continues to be an advocate for public service and military veterans, and she remains an inspiration to many Americans.
