NBA Development League
The NBA Development League (NBA D-League), known since the 2017–18 season as the NBA G League, is the official minor league basketball organization of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The league was founded in 2001 to offer NBA teams a chance to develop their players in a controlled environment. Since then, the league has grown significantly and now offers a platform for players, coaches, officials, and trainers to develop their skills and advance their careers.
Teams
The NBA D-League originally started with eight teams and now has grown to 29 teams, each affiliated with an NBA team. Some NBA teams own and operate their D-League teams, while others have formed partnerships with existing D-League teams. Each team plays a 50-game regular season, followed by playoffs that culminate in the NBA D-League Finals.
Player Development
The NBA D-League offers players an opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially earn a call-up to an NBA team. Many NBA players have played in the D-League before making the jump to the NBA, including Jeremy Lin, Hassan Whiteside, and Danny Green, among others. The league also provides opportunities for young and undrafted players to develop their skill sets in a professional environment, offering them a chance to improve their chances of making an NBA roster.
Other Programs
In addition to player development programs, the NBA D-League also offers a variety of programs for coaches, officials, trainers, and front office personnel. These programs help participants develop their skills and advance their careers within the basketball industry. The NBA D-League also has partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to provide career development opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in the business of basketball.
Overall , the NBA Development League (now known as the NBA G League) plays a crucial role in developing the next generation of basketball talent while providing avenues for career development within the industry.
