The Global Fund is an international financing organization that supports and coordinates the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria. The organization was established in 2002 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It was created as a public-private partnership with the mission of mobilizing funds and coordinating the efforts of governments, civil society organizations, and private sector partners to fight these three deadly diseases.
The Global Fund works with and provides funding to partner organizations, including governments, civil society groups, businesses, and researchers, to scale up the prevention, treatment, and care of HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. The organization has a results-driven approach, aiming to achieve the greatest impact in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Its work has already saved millions of lives and has helped to strengthen health systems and address the underlying social determinants of these diseases.
The organization is governed by a Board that includes representatives from donor and implementing countries, non-governmental organizations, and other key stakeholders. The Board is responsible for overseeing the allocation of funds, approving grants, and setting strategic priorities. The Global Fund is also subject to an independent audit and evaluation process to ensure accountability and adherence to its core principles.
Since its inception, The Global Fund has mobilized over US$45 billion in funding and has supported programs in more than 100 countries around the world. Despite the tremendous progress made in fighting HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria, much work remains to be done. The Global Fund's efforts are critical in accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of health, poverty reduction, and gender equality.
