What is Triumeq?

Triumeq is an HIV medication that contains a combination of three drugs: abacavir, lamivudine, and dolutegravir. It is produced by the pharmaceutical company ViiV Healthcare UK Ltd. It is a fixed-dose combination tablet, taken once daily, and is used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children who weigh at least 40 kg.

History of Triumeq

Triumeq was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2014 , and it was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) the same year. Triumeq is the first FDA-approved single-tablet regimen to include dolutegravir, a new HIV drug that was developed by ViiV Healthcare.

How does Triumeq work?

Triumeq contains three drugs that work in different ways to fight HIV infection. Abacavir and lamivudine are both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), which prevent HIV from multiplying by interfering with an enzyme that is necessary for the virus to replicate itself. Dolutegravir is an integrase inhibitor that blocks an enzyme that is needed for HIV to integrate its genetic material into the DNA of human cells.

Effectiveness and Safety

Triumeq has been shown to be highly effective in suppressing HIV and improving immune function in clinical studies. It is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, although it may cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, headache, and fatigue. Triumeq has also been associated with a rare but serious hypersensitivity reaction that can be life-threatening. Patients are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they experience any symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction, such as fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

Overall, Triumeq has been an important addition to the treatment options available for people living with HIV, and it continues to be an important therapy in the fight against the HIV epidemic.
