Just four years later, amidst growing fears over a potential Soviet missile attack on the United States, Skunk Works engineers - who often worked ten hours a day, six days a week - created the U-2, the world's first dedicated spy plane. It cruised at 70,000 feet, snapping aerial photographs of Soviet installations.

3,700 employees Today's Skunk Works employs 3,700 employees at facilities in Palmdale, California, Marietta, Georgia, and Fort Worth, Texas. They are working on over 500 projects, from radar coatings to war games to compact fusion reactors to a Mach 6 spyplane.

"Kelly" Johnson, the legendary boss of Lockheed Skunk Works, boiled them down to a simple motto: "Be quick, be quiet, and be on time." These three principles guided Johnson's operation to a spectacular aeronautical breakthrough.

Apple has one of the best early examples of a Skunk Works, with Steve Jobs and a hand-picked team of 20 people moving to a small nearby building called Texaco Towers to work on what became the Macintosh.
