Zulu Alpha Kilo stands out as a maverick global indie agency within the fiercely competitive advertising industry dominated by global holding companies.

Zulu Alpha Kilo was founded by Zak Mroueh, one of Canada's best known creative directors in 2008. In 2017, Ad Age selected Zulu as its International Small Agency of the Year, for the second consecutive year, and, last year as runner-up.

The project is called “Splash Spots,” and it involves a redesign of the hydrant cap to reduce water flow by a further 50% - while creating four different kinds of water sprays to delight the kids who are often first in line for a cooldown.

I'm not sure exactly, but I think it's supposed to be about chaos. I believe I read or heard somewhere that Thomas said in an interview that he came up with it because he heard pilots saying “Alpha Zulu” on a rather rough flight, and it almost sounded bad like “mayday mayday” to him, which is a pilot code for disaster.

Since Greenwich is the site of the “zero meridian,” they called GMT “Zero Time” or simply “Z- Time.” In the phonetic alphabet that the flyers of the time used to make themselves understood on their radios, “Z” became “Zebra.” When the alphabet was changed, the call sign became “Zulu.”

Shaka kaSenzangakhona is universally recognised as the founder of what would become known as the “Zulu nation”. He ruled from about 1817 until he was assassinated by his half-brothers in 1828. He's credited with elevating the Zulu from a fairly insignificant group, one among others, to a more unified “state”.
