Kinetic means “togetherness due to movement and energy” and is used to describe Kinetic Sand because, unlike the sand at the beach, Kinetic Sand sticks together when force is applied to it. When a liquid is added to cornstarch it starts to become thicker, similar to how sand becomes heavier with water at the beach.

We can see that it starts act just like normal sand again. And from cleanup aspect it's pretty easy as all just clumps together if you don't have pieces of sand everywhere.

Add your favorite essential oil to wet mixture before combining wet and dry mixture if you want to add scent. Or, use an anti-microbial or anti- bacterial essential oil for longer lasting kinetic sand.

According to professor Robert Colombo, watching oddly satisfying videos, including kinetic sand videos, causes the release of happy chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine in the brain. In essence, we get pleasure from these videos as if we're actually cutting or crunching sand ourselves.

How to make kinetic sand

1. Put the sand in a bowl and add the cornflour. Mix well.
2. Add the washing up liquid and a splash of water. Stir to create a paste (add a little more water if needed).
3. Add a few drops of food colouring – you could even try making different batches of different colours.
4. Leave the mixture to dry.

While kinetic sand won't poison a person if they eat it, it does pose a choking hazard, and if large amounts are eaten it can cause constipation.

Kinetic Sand feels soothing and smooth. It is fluid as the sand sticks to itself and moves gently as it falls in your hands. (This may be best seen in the video below). When you touch kinetic sand you expect it to feel like ordinary sand and there are some similarities, however it feels less grainy.

Store-bought Kinetic Sand is made from fine sand and polydimethylsiloxane (also called dimethicone). It's an unusual substance in that its viscosity increases under stress. You can form it into fun shapes and slice it.
