The story of Folds of Honor began when Rooney was on a flight home from his second tour of duty in Iraq. As his flight landed, the pilot announced they carried the remains of Corporal Brock Bucklin on board.

Since its inception in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded approximately 52,000 scholarships totaling over $230 million in all 50 states. Among the students served, 45 percent are minorities. It is rated a four-star charity by Charity Navigator and Platinum on GuideStar.

When it was time to gather members of the clan for a battle, the Scots would shout the sluagh-gairm, which meant "army cry." It is made up of the Scottish Gaelic word sluagh, meaning "army," and ghairm, meaning "call, cry." This came into English as slogorn and later became slogan.

FOH First Responder Scholarships provide funding for private school tuition or tutoring in grades K-12, tuition for college, technical or trade school and post-graduate work, including a master's degree, doctorate, or professional program.

Financials were prepared by an independent accountant and reviewed by an audit committee. In 2021, Folds of Honor awarded approximately $30 million in educational scholarships to more than 6,000 students.
