You came here for the speed, and the new limited-edition Smoke by Xpedition Archery delivers. It's the fastest bow they've produced, and one of the fastest-rated hunting bows ever, at a meteoric 370 fps. IBO. The Smoke has a 32-inch axle-to-axle length and a 5.375-inch brace height.

The International Bowhunters Organization and Archery Trade Association use specific formulas to measure arrow speeds. IBO speed is measured by shooting a bow with an 80-pound draw weight (+/- 2 pounds), maximized draw length, and a 400-grain arrow. ATA speed is measured with a 70-pound draw weight (+/- .

These guidelines work for most recurve bows, but always follow the manufacturer's recommended brace-height range. 62- and 64-inch bows have 7½- to 8½- inch brace heights. 66- and 68-inch bows have 8- to 9-inch brace heights. 70- and 72-inch bows have 8¾- to 9½-inch brace heights.

(Brace height is the measurement of the distance between the string and the deepest part of the bow grip.) If a bow has an incorrect brace height, either too high or too low, you will recognize the problem by the following symptoms: The arrows will not be grouping as tightly.

Looking more like a piece of highly sensitive scientific equipment than a bow, the modern compound bow is by far one of the most powerful ever conceived. Incorporating a series of sophisticated levers, cables, and pulleys, these bows use mechanical advantage to store more energy than the average human could do alone.

Those variables affect how fast your bow shoots an arrow, which is measured in feet per second. The higher the number, the faster your arrow is flying. Most hunting setups propel arrows 270 to 285 fps, which is slower than the often-advertised IBO or ATA speeds of 350 fps or higher.

270-280 fps We (and many archers who are much smarter than me) have found that arrows fly optimally in the 270-280 fps range.

Technological innovations over the past three years have produced huge increases in arrow speed, and it's now common to find bows that produce IBO speeds greater than 330 -- or even 350 -- feet per second.

If the brace height is higher, then the arrow will leave the string earlier, resulting in a lower arrow speed but in theory, a more forgiving bow, as there is less opportunity for the arrow to be influenced while attached to the string.
