If the deck is Merbau, Teak or Jarrah for example, you will most likely want to use an oil to enhance the natural beauty of the timber. Alternatively, if your deck is Treated Pine, you may want to use a stain to change the colour and achieve a more rich, solid look.

The amount of pigment in an oil makes it less durable to it's stain counter part. A stain contains extra pigment and offers further protection from harsh weather conditions and foot traffic.

If you used a penetrating oil stain, you may have allowed the stain to build up too thick a coat on the surface of the wood. Penetrating wood stains are not intended to be a surface finish. If applied too thickly, they won't dry properly and will remain tacky to the touch.

A common cause of decking oil not drying is applying too much. If your decking has been absorbing the oil but suddenly stops, the wood is probably already saturated with oil, and so can't absorb any more. To fix this, you can wipe off the excess oil with a lint-free cloth.
