300: Rise of an Empire is a 2014 American epic historical action film directed by Noam Murro from a screenplay by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes.

"300" focuses on the Spartan soldiers and their battle against the Persian army at Thermopylae, while "300: Rise of an Empire" focuses on the naval battle between the Greeks and the Persians at Salamis, and features a different set of characters, including Themistocles and Artemisia.

Summaries. Greek general Themistocles of Athens leads the naval charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

300 is a 2006 American epic historical action film loosely based on the 1998 comic series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley. Both are fictionalized retellings of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars.

Both films are loosely based on fact. The first is about the Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.), where 300 Spartans fought to the death to defend Greece against a massive invading Persian army. The dead included Sparta's king, Leonidas. Terrible as the defeat was, it inspired Greece's resistance and eventual victory.

Like the comic book, the “300” takes inspirations from the real Battle of Thermopylae and the events that took place in the year of 480 BC in ancient Greece. An epic movie for an epic historical event.

In terms of chronology, the movie for the most part occurs in parallel with the original 300 movie. However, there are events which occur both before and after the original 300 movie. Events which occur before include the Battle of Marathon and Xerxes becoming the God-King.

An army of Spartans, Thespians and Thebans remained to fight the Persians. Leonidas and the 300 Spartans with him were all killed, along with most of their remaining allies. The Persians found and beheaded Leonidas' corpse–an act that was considered to be a grave insult.

Modern day Sparta, the capital of the prefecture of Lakonia, lies on the eastern foothills of Mount Taygetos in the Evrotas River valley. The city has been built upon the site of ancient Sparta, whose Acropolis lies north of the modern city. To the southwest stands Mt. Taygetos.

Sparta was a city-state located in the southeastern Peloponnese region of ancient Greece. Sparta grew to rival the size of the city-states Athens and Thebes by subjugating its neighboring region of Messenia.

Based on the homonymous comic book by Frank Miller, the movie earned a huge fan base around the world. Like the comic book, the “300” takes inspirations from the real Battle of Thermopylae and the events that took place in the year of 480 BC in ancient Greece. An epic movie for an epic historical event.
