AT&T's "Music" TV spot is a commercial that features the classic rock hit "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. The 30-second ad starts with a couple driving down a long stretch of road in the middle of nowhere. The man is seen tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to the rhythm of the song, and the woman is singing along to the lyrics.

As the song plays, the camera cuts to various shots of people of different backgrounds and ages enjoying their favorite music. A young girl is seen swaying to the beat on her headphones, while an older gentleman is shown dancing in his living room.

"Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple

"Smoke on the Water" is a song by the English rock band Deep Purple , released in 1972 on their studio album "Machine Head." The iconic riff of the song is one of the most recognizable in rock history.

Inspiration for the Song

The song was inspired by a fire that broke out at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland on December 4, 1971, during a Frank Zappa concert. Deep Purple was planning to record their album at the Montreux Casino soon after the concert, but the venue burned down, forcing them to find a new location to record.

Composition and Recording

The song was composed by all members of the band, including guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice. The lyrics of the song describe the events of the fire, with references to "smoke" and "fire in the sky."

The track was recorded at the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. The song was the last track recorded for the album, and it quickly became one of Deep Purple's most popular songs.

Legacy

"Smoke on the Water" is considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time and has been covered by many artists. The song's iconic riff has been used in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials. In 2017, the song became a piece of scientific history when Microsoft, UW, and Twist Bioscience collaborated to encode it into DNA.
