The Cheerios O has always stood for oats - General Mills. About us.

History. Cheerios were introduced on May 2, 1941, as "Cheerioats". The name was shortened to "Cheerios" on December 2, 1945, after a competing cereal manufacturer, Quaker Oats, claimed to hold the rights to use the term "oats". Cheerios' production was based upon the extrusion process invented for Kix in 1937.

Launched in 1882, the Quaker Oats man was the first (according to the company) branded cereal mascot.

So General Mills changed the name to Cheerios in 1945 to reflect the “o” shape that was pumped out by the puffing gun. Although they originally tested ten different shapes, they decided on the floating ring that named the “o” in Cheerios. General Mills has continued to market Cheerios as the healthy oat cereal.

Quaker Oats didn't like it, though, and filed a trademark infringement against General Mills for the use of “oats” in the brand name. Instead of a drawn-out fight, General Mills changed the name to Cheerios. The name played to the O shape of the puffed oats and created a more fun and evocative brand name.
