This claim is unsubstantiated, although the Chick-fil-A southern-style chicken sandwich (served with pickles on a steamed roll), introduced on March 21, 1964, was most likely the first chicken sandwich introduced by a fast food restaurant chain.

The invention of the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich began as the solution to an interesting problem. In the early 1960s, Truett Cathy was running a successful restaurant called The Dwarf Grill (now called The Dwarf House®) in the Atlanta suburb of Hapeville, Georgia, when he was approached with an offer.

It's a play on the “chicken fillet,” and that capital “A” is on purpose: it represents the “grade A” top quality chicken used in the now-famous sandwich. Truett Cathy, Chick-fil-A's founder, created the sandwich using whole, boneless 100-percent real chicken, a standard that remains today.

When we first opened our doors in 1967, our founder Truett Cathy wanted the company's name to reflect the top quality customers should expect each time they visited a restaurant. That's why he chose Chick-fil-A: “Chick” to represent our signature menu item, and “fil-A” as a play on the word “filet,” with a small twist.
