Team History Founded in 1959 as the “Boston Patriots,” the team was an original member of the American Football League (AFL). The Patriots joined the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger. They changed their name to the New England Patriots when they moved to Foxborough, MA.

In the Patriots' 58-year history, they have an overall regular season record of 500 wins, 391 losses, and 9 ties, plus an overall postseason record of 37 wins and 20 losses.

Hunt, one of the founders of the AFL, claims he originally coined the term “Super Bowl” after watching his kids play with the famous Super Ball toy, though other reports state that sports journalists had used the name for some time and Hunt only inspired the use of it as the official name for the game.

This means that a total of 12 teams progress from the regular season onto the road to the Super Bowl, with each side seeded based on their record from the campaign.
