The inaugural World Cup of Hockey was played in 1996, and the next installment did not occur until 2004 during the NHL lockout. The concept was revived in 2016 and was scheduled to be played again four years later in 2020, but the expiration of the NHL collective bargaining agreement caused its cancellation.

The format The tournament will utilize a round robin style of play by groups. The four teams in each pool will play each other once over the course of a week, gaining points like the current NHL system with tie breakers being decided by goal differential and regulation wins.

It was held from September 17 to September 29 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Canada won the championship, defeating Team Europe in the best-of-three final.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in February of 2024. The NHL and NHLPA said in a joint statement, “Unfortunately, in the current environment it is not feasible to hold the World Cup of Hockey at that time.”
