General directions: Clean affected area with soap and warm water and dry thoroughly. Apply a thin layer of Fungi-Nail Anti-Fungal over affected area twice daily (morning and night) or as directed by a doctor. The brush applicator allows for easy application on skin around the nail and cuticle area.

Nail fungus is also called onychomycosis (on-ih-koh-my-KOH-sis). When fungus infects the areas between your toes and the skin of your feet, it's called athlete's foot (tinea pedis).

A procedure to remove affected nails completely isn't usually necessary, but may be recommended if the infection is severe or painful and other treatments haven't helped. If your nail is surgically removed, a new nail should eventually grow back in its place.

Your health care provider may prescribe an antifungal cream, such as efinaconazole (Jublia) and tavaborole (Kerydin). You rub this product into your infected nails after soaking. These creams may work better if you first thin the nails.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.

If you want to get rid of a toenail fungus quickly, the best thing to do is to see a doctor for prescription medication such as fluconazole (Diflucan). Natural remedies may be able to relieve your symptoms, but there isn't certainty that they will work, and even if they do, it will likely take longer.

Can toenail fungus spread to other areas of your body? Yes. But toenail fungus usually doesn't spread beyond your toe. Some dermatophyte fungi spread easily to your skin.

What does nail fungus look like when it first starts? In its early stages, nail fungus looks like dry, brittle, cracked, or discolored edges of the nail, usually on the front and side edges of the nail.

Signs and symptoms of a fungal nail infection

• discolouration of the nail – it may turn white, black, yellow or green.
• thickening and distortion of the nail – it may become an unusual shape or texture and be difficult to trim.

When it comes to nail fungus, it's important to differentiate between the time it take to “treat” or “cure” it versus the time it takes for a new, healthy nail to fully emerge. It usually takes a few weeks to a few months to eradicate the underlying infection.

Antifungal treatments are thought to be effective in treating about 60 to 80% of fungal nail infections. It can take between 6 and 18 months for the appearance of the affected nail to return to normal, and in some cases the nail may not look the same as before the infection.
