Some sources have suggested the cakes became popular in the 1950s following the emergence of prepared cake mixes after World War II. Among the earliest published recipes was submitted by a reader ("Mrs. Tom A. (Velma) Harris") to the Sapulpa Daily Herald in September 1964.

Those cakes predate cake mixes, a necessity for contemporary dump cake recipes. Given that, it makes sense that there was a surge in dump cake recipes in hometown newspapers and community cookbooks in the 1960s and 70s, a decade or so after national brand cake mixes hit our grocery store shelves in the early 1950s.

The classic dump cake gets its name from the method of just dumping - literally - all of the ingredients (usually involving cake mix, canned or fresh fruit, and lots of butter) into a pan and letting it bake.

If you don't know, a dump cake is taking 2 16oz cans of fruit, putting them in a cake dish, then covering in box cake mix (just the powder, not the eggs and butter and milk), then adding pats of butter over the whole thing. And bake.

Created in England during the 1700s, original recipes called for one pound each of flour, sugar, butter, and eggs. The large quantities and no leveling made it a large, heavy cake that could easily feed big groups of people. Proportions were altered over time to make a smaller, lighter cake, but the name stuck.

During the Revolutionary War, soldiers did not always have enough food to eat. One food that they could make was called fire cakes. Fire cakes were made of flour, water, and salt if it was available. There is no true “recipe” because everyone would make it a bit differently.

Comic cakes or cartoon cakes are regular cakes that are decorated to look like 2D cartoons. The resulting look is very whimsical and looks more like a drawing than a cake.

Nothing needs to be cooked through in a dump cake recipe. There are no raw eggs or anything like that. The fruit filling heats below while the butter melts above. The melted butter mixes with the dry cake mix to create my favorite part of the dessert.

Pierre took the recipe with him to Knokke and opened a bakery-pastry shop in Kustlaanin 1932. There he continued to bake the famous cake and named it “Misérable” after Victor Hugo, French romantic poet, playwright and novelist who was considered one of the most important French-speaking.

The goal of each episode is for the bakers to fool three rotating celebrity judges. The judges get 20 seconds to observe each cake among decoy objects. If they correctly pick the baker's cake from the mix, the baker is eliminated from that round.

The carbon dioxide from the baking powder or baking soda will expand the cake. Gluten holds those bubbles in place (think of a balloon that contains air) while the fat from the oil or butter lubricates the process. “When it bakes, the whole protein network hardens and holds the bubbles in cakes,” Vodovotz said.
