Insulin detemir is a long-acting (up to 24-hour duration of action) recombinant human insulin analog. LEVEMIR® is produced by a process that includes expression of recombinant DNA in Saccharomyces cerevisiae followed by chemical modification. LEVEMIR® is a clear, colorless, aqueous, neutral sterile solution.

Levemir® is a long-acting insulin that can be taken once or twice daily to control high blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes.

Levemir® has a long and steady blood-sugar-lowering action within 3 to 4 hours after injection. Levemir® provides up to 24 hours of basal insulin coverage.

Levemir is a long-acting insulin analogue used as a basal insulin. Levemir is for subcutaneous administration only. Levemir must not be administered intravenously, as it may result in severe hypoglycaemia. Intramuscular administration should also be avoided.

The usual starting dose of Levemir for type 2 diabetes is 10 units. Or your doctor may prescribe a dose based on your body weight. The usual dosage range is from 0.1 units/kg to 0.2 units/kg. You'll likely inject your dose once per day in the evening.

Levemir dosage scale The FlexTouch pen has a dial that you'll set to your prescribed dose. The dial goes up to a maximum dose of 80 units per injection. So if your prescribed Flextouch dosage is more than 80 units per day, you'll give yourself two injections, one right after the other.

Levemir is a long-acting insulin that should be injected below the skin once or twice daily. (When taken in smaller doses, Levemir may be considered an intermediate-acting insulin.) When Levemir is taken once daily, inject the insulin with the evening meal or at bedtime.

One 3-milliliter (mL) prefilled Levemir FlexTouch pen contains 300 units of insulin. The FlexTouch pen has a dial that you'll set to your prescribed dose. The dial goes up to a maximum dose of 80 units per injection.

Levemir is long-acting and may be used to treat adults and children over the age of two years with diabetes. Levemir may be kept out of the refrigerator for 42 days when in use.

For some people, twice-daily dosing of Levemir may help to manage blood sugar levels better than once-daily dosing. When you first start taking Levemir, your doctor will likely prescribe it once daily. But if your blood sugar level stays too high, your doctor may split your dose into two daily doses instead.

Both Levemir and Lantus are preferred over NPH insulin because they have a longer duration of action, a less pronounced peak, and are more consistent in their effects with less risk of hypoglycemia. Both Levemir and Lantus are clear solutions, unlike NPH which requires resuspension prior to injection.
