Holmes Thurmond As we celebrate our 70th Anniversary, we can picture Skeeter founder, Holmes Thurmond, working late nights designing and building the first Skeeter boat and then taking it out for its inaugural fishing trip. One thing is for certain, Holmes wanted to share his accomplishments with others.

Holmes Thurmond The developer of the modern bass boat is widely considered to be Skeeter Fishing Boats, a company now owned by Yamaha. In 1948 Holmes Thurmond designed and launched the first Skeeter boat.

Teak Wood. Teak wood is generally known as one of the best boat building materials. It is put through stress tests and abuse, so it can naturally bend and be played with a little bit. Teak wood is a very dense, hard, and strong wood that also contains natural chemicals that prevent rotting.

Teak has long been popular for its strength and durability. The British Admiralty pilot books still warn cargo ships to avoid colliding with Asian teak-hulled junks, as the wood often prevails against steel hull plates.
