Operation Smile treats patients with cleft conditions all over the world. Some patients are unable to eat or communicate properly and are bullied by peers for looking “different.” A surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes to treat cleft conditions can be utterly life-changing.

Operation Smile was founded in 1982 when Dr. Bill Magee Jr., a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathy, a nurse and clinical social worker, traveled to the Philippines with a group of medical volunteers to repair children's cleft lips and cleft palates.

In May 2010, Tata Group announced a $5 million donation to Operation Smile helping the patients to achieve their dreams of speaking and smiling like normal people.

Operation Smile has provided over 220,000 surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities in over 60 countries since 1982, at no cost to the recipients.

This is the start of the positive feedback loop of happiness. When our smiling muscles contract, they fire a signal back to the brain, stimulating our reward system, and further increasing our level of happy hormones, or endorphins. Passing on good feelings via smiling can help others feel less pressured and relieve some of their stress, which ultimately helps productivity. Relaxed people are also more open to new ideas and are more trusting of those that have made them feel relaxed. Smiling indicates to others that you are approachable.
