Whatsoever things are true University Motto "Quaecumque Sunt Vera” This Latin phrase was adopted as the University's official motto in 1890. Translated as "Whatsoever things are true," it comes from the New Testament book of Philippians (4:8), in which St. Paul admonishes the Christians in the Greek city of Philippi.

The hazing allegedly occurred on the elite university's football team, where upperclassmen forced younger teammates to undergo a number of sexualized and degrading rituals at the team's Wisconsin training facility as well as in the Northwestern locker room.

A decade after Northwestern was at the center of an attempt to establish the first college athletes union, the university is facing more than a dozen lawsuits across multiple sports with allegations including sexual abuse by teammates as well as racist comments by coaches and race-based assaults.

Northwestern received an anonymous emailed complaint of hazing allegations within the football program. The complainant alleged players pressured teammates into participating in hazing activities that often occurred in the locker room or at training camp.

The lawsuit allegations include naked players in locker rooms forcing freshmen to also strip naked and then perform various acts. It also accuses Fitzgerald of enabling a culture of racism, including forcing players of color to cut their hair and behave differently to be more in line with the “Wildcat Way.”

How did hazing scandal become public? In November, a former Northwestern football player contacted the school's administration and alleged hazing within the football program. The school hired the law firm of ArentFox Schiff to conduct an investigation, led by Maggie Hickey, a former inspector general of Illinois.
