According to the department, DeVry reportedly misled prospective students through false advertising between 2008 and 2015. ED alleges that the university advertised that 90% of its graduates who actively seek employment obtained a job in their desired field within six months of graduation.

According to the FTC, DeVry's advertisements made deceptive claims about the likelihood that graduates would find jobs in their fields and earn more after graduation than those graduating with bachelor's degrees from other colleges or universities.

Students will be responsible for incidentals and assessed the cost of unreturned textbooks. Students that fail a DeVry course are responsible for tuition payment of repeated courses.

The Federal Trade Commission accused DeVry of misrepresenting its job and salary outcomes through the ads, leading to a $100 million settlement in 2016. The university also settled with the Education Department around that time, which resulted in stricter agency oversight.
