The Kingdom of Avalor is based on Latin American countries like Mexico. The use of wrought iron and tile in Avalor Palace takes cues from the Caribbean, the Spanish colonial and Mexican architecture. Avalor's Mooncliff Mountain and Suncliff Temple are inspired by the Mesoamerican pyramids of Teotihuacan.

She is the queen and current ruler of Avalor, but before she became queen, she learned to rule as the crown princess until she came of age to be named queen and officially succeed her parents as Avalor's sovereign as their oldest daughter and heiress to the throne.

This line up has changed over the years, but the criteria for being pat of the range includes being a character in a Disney or Pixar animated feature film. Elena of Avalor was created for a television series, so does not qualify.

According to a Disney spokeswoman, Sofia has a mixed fairy-tale heritage; her mother and father are from Galdiz (which is based on Spain) and Freezenburg (which is based on Scandinavia), respectively.

As the story took on a life of its own, Disney felt they had to come out with a statement clarifying what their make-believe princess is - and isn't. The end result is that Sofia is not actually Latina.
