The Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World or Disney World, or simply abbreviated WDW, is an entertainment resort complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, United States, governed by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.

Following the success of Disneyland, near Anaheim, California, Disney began searching for a location for his second theme park. In 1965 he purchased 43 acres (17 hectares) of barren land in central Florida. Disney died late the following year, and his brother Roy Disney assumed supervision of the project.

Owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company through its Parks, Experiences and Products division, the park opened on October 1, 1971, as "Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom", the first of four theme parks at the resort.
