If you attended Corinthian Colleges (Heald, Everest, or WyoTech), you may qualify for federal student loan forgiveness. The U.S. Department of Education is committed to forgiving the federal student loans of eligible former Corinthian students.

In 2015, Everest University's parent company, Corinthian Colleges, filed for bankruptcy and shut down its remaining operations.

You may be eligible for income-driven repayment (IDR) loan forgiveness if you've have been in repayment for 20 or 25 years. An IDR plan bases your monthly payment on your income and family size.

If a borrower dies, their federal student loans are discharged after the required proof of death is submitted. The borrower's family is not responsible for repaying the loans. A parent PLUS loan is discharged if the parent dies or if the student on whose behalf a parent obtained the loan dies.

The U.S. Department of Education announced in 2022 that it would discharge all remaining federal student loan balances for former Corinthian Colleges students.

If you have loans that have been in repayment for more than 20 or 25 years, those loans may immediately qualify for forgiveness. Borrowers who have reached 20 or 25 years (240 or 300 months) worth of payments for IDR forgiveness may see their loans forgiven in Spring 2023.

If you received a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $20,000 in debt relief. If you did not receive a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $10,000 in debt relief.

20 years if all loans you're repaying under the plan were received for undergraduate study. The remaining balance will be forgiven after 20 years. 25 years if any loans you're repaying under the plan were received for graduate or professional study. The remaining balance will be forgiven after 25 years.

In general, student loan debt is not inheritable and does not transfer to a spouse, child, or other loved one upon the borrower's death. The only exception is if the loan was cosigned. In that case, the cosigner may find themselves responsible for repaying what's left.
