Frequently Asked Questions about nature valley tv spot, 'recyclable wrappers: imagine the possibilities'

These wrappers can be recycled by dropping them off at How2Recycle centers in grocery stores nationwide. The plastic itself can be turned into synthetic lumber and decking equipment, according to General Mills.

Developed in collaboration with Nature Valley R&D scientists and packaging partners, the wrapper uses new-to-the-category, advanced film processing with unique polyethylene polymers.

WE'RE COMMITTED TO A MORE RECYCLABLE FUTURE. We're starting by making our Crunchy bar wrappers store drop-off recyclable. But that's only our first step toward making all of our packaging fully recyclable by 2025.

With the new packaging, Nature Valley reports that it plans to educate consumers about the store drop-off recycling system, engaging their interest in reducing landfilled material and stimulate recycling.

Because they're made of a mix of materials like plastics and aluminum, most candy wrappers can't be recycled. The general rule is that the fewer materials something is made of, the easier (and less expensive) it is to recycle.

Biscuit wrappers are soft plastics and should not be recycled at home. Most supermarkets now have an in-store collection point to recycle soft and thin plastics, including biscuit wrappers.

The wrapper is made of a polyethylene film, a type of plastic, which, according to General Mills spokesperson, “can be sold with other flexible plastics to be used to create synthetic lumber/decking equipment (e.g., products made by a company called Trex), turned back into wrappers, and for injection molding.”

Food wrappers come in a variety of types and sizes. Food packaging can be made of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), or polyethylene (PE).

Sustainable practices are the processes services employ to maintain the qualities that are valued in the physical environment. Living sustainably is about living within the means of natural systems (environment) and ensuring that our lifestyle doesn't harm other people.

Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, the health and well-being of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments.

Right now, the cost of using sustainable packaging is understandably higher than conventional packaging. This is due to the materials involved and the sourcing of them (both virgin and used materials) – but also due to the less-established supply chains, manufacturing processes, and lower economies of scale.

Reusable packaging is both environment-friendly and cost-efficient. By reducing the repeated need to manufacture single-use packaging, companies can save the cost of raw material, energy, and labor. Since reusable packaging is designed for repeated use, it is stronger and more durable than single-use packaging.
