The Heavenly Way Baptist Church is the church that the McKellan family goes to. Grandpa is a pastor at the church. In "Remember How this All Started", it is revealed that Moz and Cocoa have not been taking their kids to church, which shocks M'Dear and Grandpa.

We actually straightened my own hair and did not use a wig on the first episode we shot, which was episode 107. But my hair got damaged badly and I lost a lot of my curl pattern. So in order to save my curls and repair the damage we had to use a wig.”

Rounding out the cast as the McKellan children are Jackson as 14-year old Jade, Russell-Bailey as 12-year old Shaka, Wright as 10-year old Mazzi, and James as 8-year old Ami. Season 1 of the show was executive produced by DeLoatch and directed by Eric Dean Seaton.

The family sitcom is penned entirely by black writers, and draws from the personal stories of its writers, including creator and executive producer Meg DeLoatch, who got the idea when she went to a family reunion in Georgia three years ago.

The Family Reunion is the tragedy of a lonely individual Harry and of the spiritual struggle which he faces in his life and from which he longs to escape. Thus, the play shows a purgatorial struggle where the struggle ends with redemption of not only Harry, but the family of Monchensey from the sin.

Shaka is the second child and oldest son of Cocoa McKellan and Moz McKellan. He has an older sister, Jade McKellan, a younger brother, Mazzi McKellan, a younger sister, Ami McKellan and baby sibling to be born.

For nearly two seasons, the wig has - for better or worse - been part of the storyline. Its straightened style symbolized the beginning of what Talia says is Jade's “self-identification journey.” But that's not how the audience took it. “We didn't get the nicest wig,” Talia tells Teen Vogue by phone.
