The big conflict is that the Allegiant are uprising against Evelyn and the Factionless. The Bureau is in charge of the city, but the citizens do not know that they exist. To stop everyone from killing themselves, the Bureau decides to reset everyone's memories with the memory serum.

Tobias realized Tris sided with Marcus and betrayed him, but she argues that he should know her better to understand there was a purpose to her coming. Tobias later finds the information Marcus and Tris were after, and releases it for everyone to see just as Evelyn declares the factionless now in control of government.

Set in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian Chicago, the story follows Tris Prior, her boyfriend Four, and their small group of friends escaping over the wall that enclosed the city. Once outside, however, they discover new truths that will shift their alliances and introduce new threats.

After Tris lies her way out of jail, she's approached by a group called the Allegiant, whose goal, conveniently, is to get out of the city. This plan is looking better and better because Evelyn, Tobias's mom, is enacting stringent rules to keep the citizens of the city under her control.

Tris is instructed by Tori, the woman who administered her aptitude test, to hide her results from everyone. Attempting to conceal her secret of being Divergent, Tris joins the Dauntless faction (bravery-based) and meets Tobias (Four).

first person point of view Allegiant by Veronica Roth is the last of the Divergent series and is told in first person point of view by not only Tris, but also Tobias.

Tris, along with her friends, end up successfully taking down the Bureau, however, the book ends tragically when Tris is shot and dies. This was a major shock for readers, who never would have thought that the book's protagonist would actually die.
