In the early-1960s, rock and roll in its purest form was gradually overtaken by pop rock, beat, psychedelic rock, blues rock, and folk rock, which had grown in popularity.

The 1960s was one of the most tumultuous and divisive decades in world history. The era was marked by the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and antiwar protests, countercultural movements, political assassinations and the emerging "generation gap."

Popular music of the United States in the 1960s became innately tied up into causes, opposing certain ideas, influenced by the sexual revolution, feminism, Black Power and environmentalism.

The Ventures, Chet Atkins, Johnny & the Hurricanes, Percy Faith, Bill Black, Ferrante & Teicher – these giants of the genre are all here on Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 1 – 1960. But, so are Monty Kelly, the Ramblers, and Charles Wolcott.

In the '60s this was achieved by running signal through a tape machine in record, and the delay was created by the gap between the record and playback heads. Multiple echoes result from feeding some of that signal back through the machine again.
