Dapsone (Aczone) 5% gel is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of acne vulgaris in adults and children older than 12 years. Although dapsone has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity, the mechanism of action in the treatment of acne is unknown.

Joshua Zeichner, the Director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, he explained that Aczone is unique in that it doesn't cause skin irritation and also doesn't bleach your fabrics should you wear it overnight.

Proactiv is likely one of the acne treatments you've heard about. Ads for it are everywhere, and plenty of celebrities seem to swear by it. The ringing social media and TV endorsements seem to imply that Proactiv will work for your acne, even if you've already tried everything else without success.

Dapsone (Aczone) is an antibiotic. It is unknown how it helps with acne, but it likely lowers the number of acne-causing bacteria and inflammation on the skin.

Use only a pea-sized amount of gel each time you apply this medicine. Using benzoyl peroxide acne medication at the same time as Aczone may cause temporary changes in the color of your skin or facial hair. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 12 weeks of treatment.

Rub ACZONE Gel, 7.5% in gently and completely. Wash your hands after applying ACZONE Gel, 7.5%. If your acne does not get better after using ACZONE Gel, 7.5% for 12 weeks, talk to your doctor about continuing treatment.

And, like most acne medications, Aczone doesn't work great for everyone. If you use it for 12 weeks without seeing much improvement, let your healthcare provider or dermatologist know. You'll likely be prescribed an additional, or different, acne treatment.

Salicylic acid is best for this acne; it breaks down the stuck sebum (oil). To tackle a combination of acne types, you can alternate between a salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide formula, or use one in the morning and one at night. Or consider a retinoid treatment instead.

Aczone can cause a serious condition called methemoglobinemia, especially if you use certain medicines at the same time, including sulfa drugs, acetaminophen (Tylenol), nitroglycerin or other nitrite heart medications, seizure medicine, and several other drugs.

Aczone is easy to use and only needs to be applied once per day. Most patients do not experience any side effects. As you many know, many topical acne medications can be drying. Aczone is normally less drying than these medications and is very well tolerated overall.

Gently clean the affected skin with a mild/soapless cleanser and pat dry. Apply a small amount of medication (about the size of a pea) in a thin layer to the affected areas of skin as directed by your doctor. Depending on your brand, this medication is usually used once or twice a day.
