The locations are themed around the idea of a traditional Southern U.S. general store. Items used to decorate each store are authentic artifacts, including everyday objects from the early 1900s and after.

While working in the family gasoline business back in the late 1960s, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store founder Dan Evins began thinking of ways to better meet the needs of folks on the road. Back then, the interstate system was still young and goods and services were hard to come by.

A story about war and the bond between a dog and the soldier she loves. Cracker is one of the United States Army's most valuable weapons: a German shepherd trained to sniff out bombs, traps, and the enemy. The fate of entire platoons rests on her keen sense of smell. She's a Big Deal, and she likes it that way.

Cracker is always disparaging and offensive when used to refer to a poor white person in the South; the word in this sense often implies that the person is regarded as ignorant or uneducated. When used by Black people, cracker can refer to a Southern white racist, not necessarily poor or rural.

Cracker Barrel has been around for years and always had good food. So why do “boomers" like it? Because it was there and had good food and normal people like eating good food.. Not a mystery.

1792 In 1792, John Pearson created the first cracker in the United States, and his original formula was sold until 2008 and had the name Crown Pilot crackers. In 1801, another baker from Texas, Josiah Bent, accidentally burned a batch of biscuits.

For decades, Ray and Wilma Yoder traveled across the country on a unique quest - to visit every Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in the country. They ate their favorite meals, meatloaf and pancakes and grilled chicken sandwiches, in the most obscure of places: Duncan, S.C., and Layton, Utah, and Baraboo, Wis.

The origin of cracker is murky. Some sources suggest it came from overseers who commanded slaves. Others say it derives from a Scottish word for boasting.
