Premise. Nine strangers from the city gather for a 10-day retreat at Tranquillum House, a health and wellness resort in the fictional town of Cabrillo, California, which promises to transform and heal the guests who stay there.

Big Little Lies is an American drama television series based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty.

While Tranquillum House is meant to be located in California, the resort doesn't actually exist, with the show being filmed in Australia. The interior and outdoor pool scenes at Tranquillum House were shot at SOMA – a meditation retreat in Byron Bay.

I began writing a story about two lottery winners honeymooning at a luxury island resort but I was interrupted by an event at a backyard barbeque, which was the spark of inspiration for an entirely new idea. I put my tropical island aside and wrote Truly Madly Guilty.

1. It's Not a Horror Series.

As someone who has read Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name and seen the first six episodes of the series, I can confidently say that Nine Perfect Strangers is not a horror series.

To date, only two of Moriarty's books have been adapted for the screen, although, at different points, producers have optioned What Alice Forgot, The Husband's Secret, Truly Madly Guilty and Three Wishes.

While Nine Perfect Strangers is no doubt based on a novel, that doesn't mean the team creating it stopped there. “We definitely researched wellness retreats, and we had consultants from many of them,” Levine says of the series, which shot at an actual wellness retreat in Australia.

However, despite the thrilling series, Nine Perfect Strangers is not based on a true story.
