Inspired by circus peanuts Lucky Charms cereal debuted in 1964 with bells, fish, arrowheads, clovers, and x-shaped oat pieces alongside marshmallows shaped like green clovers, pink hearts, orange stars, and yellow moons. The cereal was created by product developer John Holahan.

General Mills has announced it will be adding a new marshmallow to Lucky Charms - a unicorn. It's the first substantial change to the cereal in roughly 10 years. The unicorn, which will replace the hourglass marshmallow, was chosen after the company solicited suggestions on social media.

In 2015, new diamond-shaped marshmallows were added in. Introduced in 2017, limited edition cinnamon vanilla Lucky Charms include only snowman, snowball, and snowflake-shaped marshmallows. In 2018 a unicorn shaped-marshmallow was added; it became a permanent addition later that year.

In 1963, when the cereal was first released, it was filled with green clovers, pink hearts, orange stars and yellow moons. In 1975 a new addition made its way to the cereal box. The blue diamond joined the sugary sweet line-up but sadly didn't stick around for the long-run.

Lucky Charms is adding unicorn-shaped marshmallows to the mix. This is the first time a new candy has been permanently added to Lucky Charms boxes in 10 years. The unicorn is replacing that dumb hourglass marshmallow, which nobody liked, anyway.
