Mucinex D tablets are used to treat nasal and sinus congestion. Mucinex D also is used to reduce chest congestion caused by the common cold, infections, or allergies. Mucinex D may also be used for purposes other than those listed.

The drug product is an extended release tablet containing an expectorant (guaifenesin) and a decongestant (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride). The maximum daily dose is 2400 mg guaifenesin and 240 mg pseudoephedrine hydrochloride.

Mucinex D is (guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine) is an expectorant/nasal decongestant combination, and Mucinex DM (guaifenesin and dextromethorphan) is an expectorant/cough suppressant combination. Mucinex D and Mucinex DM both contain the expectorant guaifenesin (which is contained as a single ingredient in Mucinex).

This medication is used for the temporary relief of coughs caused by the common cold, bronchitis, and other breathing illnesses. This product is usually not used for ongoing cough from smoking or long-term breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema) unless directed by your doctor.

Guaifenesin is in a class of medications called expectorants. It works by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways.

The dextromethorphan half-life is about 3 to 4 hours, meaning that dextromethorphan can stay in your system for about 6 to 8 hours.

Mucinex is made in England (blue bottle) and in Mexico (white bottle).

Guaifenesin is available under the following different brand names: Mucinex, Bidex 400, and Organidin NR.
