Pom-pom, also called a pom or cheerleading pom, is derived from the French word pompon, which refers to a small decorative ball made of fabric or feathers.

By adding fluffy fabric to the top of the cap, a pom-pom is created. This pom-pom adornment is reported to have been practised for ages. Pom-Poms have a long history. The origins of the pom-pom hat can be traced back to a very long time ago in Scandinavia.

Compared with tassels and jeweled trinkets, the pompom was an economically sound embellishment, as it could be scrapped together with leftover yarn. Finally, sailors used to wear hats with pompoms on them to protect them from bumping their heads in tight spaces or when the seas were rough.

A Colorful History In 1904 on a Swedish farm, a statue of the Viking god Freyr was found. The statue featured a tall hat or helmet with what appears to be a round pom-pom on top. That dates the oldest known use of the pom-pom to between 800–1066 CE!
