There are several types of waterproof materials that are used in rain jackets, but most fall into three categories: rubberized raingear, coated nylon, and Gore-TEX. Rubberized or plastic jackets usually made from PVC are excellent at repelling water and often very inexpensive.
In the simplest sense, a waterproof jacket offers the highest level of protection from rain and snow. While a water-resistant jacket offers a good, but lower level of protection.
The first modern waterproof raincoat was created following the patent by Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh in 1824 of new tarpaulin fabric, described by him as “India rubber cloth”.

Rainwear uses one of the following constructions to become waterproof and breathable: Laminates: A waterproof/breathable membrane is bonded to the underside of a garment's shell fabric much like wallpaper is applied to a wall - membrane (wallpaper) + fabric (wall) = a laminate.
There are three main types of waterproof protection to consider; wax-coated (pretty rare for technical outdoor jackets these days), PU-coated, and membrane lined jackets. Give our Buyer's Guide to Waterproof Jackets a read to understand the differences between the three waterproof protections.

Waterproof Jacket
This means the jacket has a waterproof coating on the outer fabric with fully taped seams and it may have a built in membrane lining. A membrane lining is a sheet of material with lots of tiny holes in it to help with breathability, because these holes are so small no water can penetrate it.
Polyurethane Laminate is the fabric of all fabrics that are waterproof in its own right. PUL is a polyester fabric that has a plastic backing comprising a thin waterproof layer. Polyurethane Laminate is a completely waterproof fabric, as well as being breathable and flexible.
Therefore, you need to make sure that you get the right types of waterproofing materials for your individualistic needs. Some of the best and most common include; Polyurethane, Cementitious Coating, Rubberized Asphalt, Bituminous Membrane, and PVC Waterproofing Membrane.
So, materials like polyester and nylon naturally withstand more water than cotton just because of their construction. But a water-resistant jacket can only stand up to so much rain. A waterproof material, on the other hand, provides a complete barrier to water. In this sense a plastic bag is waterproof.
If you wear the jacket frequently and are out in all conditions we recommend reproofing every three to four months. However, if you wear your jacket less frequently or are out in less extreme weather, then reproofing your jacket every six months should be sufficient.
See our waterproof care guide for advice on how to do this. How often you need to reproof a jacket depends on how often you use it and the extent to it is put to the test in the elements.
