Rogue One was a prequel to the original Star Wars saga, but with more spinoffs releasing since then, its exact place in the timeline is confusing.

The action of “Rogue One” takes place in the weeks leading up to “A New Hope.” In it, Jyn Erso, whose father was forced by the Empire to develop the Death Star, joins the Rebellion in an effort to retrieve the plans to eventually destroy the Death Star.

Neither is necessary, but should that matter? No. All they do is show the details of issues we already learned about in the Star Wars Original Trilogy films. The important part of Rogue One is that Rebel spies managed to steal the plans to the Death Star.

Going by release date, Rogue One and Solo would interrupt the sequel trilogy. If you're doing a re-watch and are interested in preserving the storyline of the core movies, just skip these two films. They have no impact on the overarching narrative, anyway.

Yes, the film shows gray heroes who have to do evil deeds in order to live another day, Vader is shown as an invincible being, and in the end it shows how important the death star's plans are and cover a plot hole present in a new hope. So it's a good movie, and it's rightly appreciated for its qualities.
