Chevy Blazer: A History | Bartow, FL. The Chevy Blazer is perhaps one of the most iconic full-size SUVs ever made. Built by GM and officially called the K5 Blazer from 1969 to the mid-1990s, this SUV was made to be rugged.

C/K pickup chassis After brainstorming, designing, and perfecting, Chevy finally unveiled the vehicle that would later become an icon in the SUV market: the Chevrolet Blazer. Built on the C/K pickup chassis, the Blazer featured a roomy, comfortable interior and a rugged exterior.

Production and assembly GM chose the Ramos Arizpe Assembly in Mexico because its Spring Hill facilities were at full capacity. On November 27, 2018, Chevrolet began production on the Blazer in Ramos Arizpe, phasing out production of the US-discontinued Chevrolet Cruze altogether.

RS stands for “Rally Sport,” referring to an appearance package on the first and second generations of the Chevrolet Camaro. On the original Camaro, the RS package included headlight covers, a different taillight treatment and some modified bodywork.

The term 'blazer' itself first appeared in print in 1952, in an article that referred to a red jacket worn by Cambridge's Lady Margaret Boat Club as a 'red Guernsey or blazer'. It was a bright (or blazing) red colour, which is how it got its name – the blazer.
