Team History Founded in 1959 as the “Boston Patriots,” the team was an original member of the American Football League (AFL). The Patriots joined the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger. They changed their name to the New England Patriots when they moved to Foxborough, MA.

But the attire isn't destroyed. It's not recycled either. Thanks to the NFL's longstanding collaboration with Good360, the losing team's apparel is actually donated to communities in need outside of the U.S. It may go to people living in Europe, Africa, or Asia. But you definitely won't see it on anyone in America.

At each club, players are usually given two shirts per game so that they can change at half-time into a fresh one but also so they can have a replacement in case of a damaged or tarnished... A shirt swap usually occurs at the end of a game when two players want to show mutual respect to each other.

Why call the team the “Patriots?” Originally located in Boston, the team was named the Patriots because of the area's heritage as the birthplace of the American Revolution.

Loyalists: colonists of the American revolutionary period who supported, and stayed loyal, to the British monarchy. Patriots: colonists who rebelled against British control during the American Revolution.

Perhaps the single most important reason for the patriot victory was the breadth of popular support for the Revolution. The Revolution would have failed miserably without the participation of thousands of ordinary farmers, artisans, and laborers who put themselves into the line of fire.
