Simply put, 100-grain broadheads are not the best choice for most bowhunters. Heads weighing 125 grains or slightly more are superior in almost every way to 100-grain broadheads for hunting, and I'll tell you why.

For most of the metal age, broadheads have weighed several hundred grains. History's warrior-hunters figured out that heavier heads penetrated armor, bone and hide better than lightweight heads that travel slightly faster.

Simply put, 100-grain broadheads are not the best choice for most bowhunters. Heads weighing 125 grains or slightly more are superior in almost every way to 100-grain broadheads for hunting, and I'll tell you why.

Even with today's small profile, fixed-blade heads, most experts recommend a maximum arrow speed of 260-270 fps. Beyond that, broadhead planing becomes problematic for all but the very best archers.

Some shooters prefer the slightly lighter and faster 115 grain round. On the other hand, others favor the smoother shooting (less felt recoil which allows for faster follow up shots) and slightly improved ballistic characteristics of the 124 grain round.

115 grain (left) and 124 grain (right) 9mm rounds look almost identical. The difference between 115 grain vs. 124 grain 9mm ammo is the weight of the bullet, with 115 grain bullets being lighter than 124 grain bullets. Basically, the 115 grain rounds are light and fast and the 124 grain rounds are heavy and slow.

There are also shooters who say that the recoil of the 124 grain round feels less snappy than the 115 grain, and more like a push. However, unless you've put thousands of rounds down range, you might not even notice a difference in recoil between the two rounds.

While the 124 grain would theoretically have more recoil than the 115 grain according to power factor, many shooters would probably disagree. Ultimately, felt recoil is pretty subjective, and therefore you should test out both flavors to see which feels best to you.
