The advantage of the HDS series is that it can start off simply and be added to as the need, experience or budget allows, or you can fit it up as a "hamburger with the lot" from the beginning. The disadvantage of the Elite series is "what you see is what you get". No other abilities are possible.
So when Lowrance does produce a new HDS series to replace the Live's, they will do software updates on the Live's to allow them to run the newer transducers and such and the Carbon's will be left out. So if you're looking at buying a model that will be current for longer, the Live might be the way to go.
