Observations: All of these yarns are really quite durable and held up well through 10 wash/dry cycles. The softest yarns are Big Twist (Joann) and Pound of Love (Lion Brand). They are also the most likely to pill, especially Big Twist.

Big Twist value yarn is sold at Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts in 371-yard skeins of 100% acrylic gold. It is a size 4/worsted weight yarn and while it is slightly scratchier (and I do mean slightly) than Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn! it isn't so scratchy as Red Heart Super Saver.

Note: From all my research, Vicuna is considered the world's most expensive yarn. Fiber Content & Description: Super chunky, Super soft – 100% superior merino wool is “volumes of chunky superfine merino wool fibers that have been spun together to resemble fluffy clouds.”

Long story short, in general, if you need machine washability AND dryability, synthetics are your best choice. If machine washability alone will do, look for synthetics, superwash wool, cotton, linen, bamboo, or a blend of those.

Worsted is sometimes known as 10 ply yarn, while DK is referred to as 8 ply.

To soften your yarn using vinegar follow these steps:

1. Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to 4 cups of cool water.
2. Soak your complete project in the vinegar solution for at least 20 minutes.
3. Remove your project from the solution and rinse it out with cool water.
4. Dry your project in the dryer on low.

Fabric made of high twist yarns results in high wearing properties i.e., abrasion & pilling. As the twist increases fibers bond tightly and it can't be pulled easily out of the yarn. Which also helps to prevent pilling.
