Monofilament can be extruded from different materials, but nylon is by far the most common and popular medium. Often, different varieties of nylon are blended together into co- and multi-polymers to produce varying degrees of stretch, strength, abrasion resistance and other important attributes.

Monofilament is neutrally buoyant by nature and is effective in fishing topwater lures as well as lures which require a line to neither sink nor float, such as hard jerkbaits. Additionally, monofilament line has long been used for backing (A.K.A. "filler") for fishing reels.

Stren. The original monofilament still holds a place for anglers as it remains a good line at a great price for most anglers on a budget. I personally use this line a lot in the fluorescent blue color for night fishing so it shows up against our black lights.

The first natural line was first made from sericterium (silk glands). The silk gland fibers were spun into line to create the first natural fishing lines. This natural line had ideal characteristics of moderate stiffness and good relative transparency.

Monofilament has a lower density than fluorocarbon, making it easier to cast. Fluorocarbon is denser and sinks faster, so it's great for deep-water fishing. Additionally, monofilament is more buoyant and can be a better choice for fishing in shallow waters or areas with heavy vegetation.

Monofilament fishing line is made of a single plastic line, and has been popular for fishing since the 1950s (although the first plastic fishing lines were introduced in 1939).

Monofilaments are produced in a melt spinning process. The polymer is melted in the extruder and conveyed under pressure to the spinning unit, then it is quenched, stretched, annealed to get the filament of enhanced properties. The material is fed into a standard extruder where it is plasticated.

Monofilament fishing line (shortened to just mono) is fishing line made from a single fiber of plastic material, as opposed to multifilament or braided fishing lines constructed from multiple strands of fibers.

Best All-Around Monofilament Fishing Line: Stren Original Those of you who've been around since the 70s may remember its blue and high-visibility gold versions, and they're still available, as is clear Stren and low-visibility green. The blue is still especially good for fishing at night with a black light.

Monofilament lines should be changed at least once a year, though many anglers recommend changing them after every fishing trip. Their durability depends on how much you use them: If you are a heavy fisher, you should change monofilament line 3 to 4 times a year. Moderate fishers can change it 2 to 3 times a year.
