Arby's, however, was quick to clarify that its name isn't about the beef but is actually a nod to the Raffel Brothers, Leroy and Forrest, who founded the Georgia-based fast food chain in 1964. Most people think that, but our name is actually based on the initials of our founders, the Raffel Brothers.

The brothers took a chance and on Thursday, July 23, 1964, when they opened their first quick service roast beef sandwich shop in Boardman, Ohio. They were going to call it “Big Tex,” but that name was already in market use, so they called the shop “Arby's” based on the initials of “R” and “B” of Raffel Brothers.

King's Hawaiian rolls, born at a bakery on the Big Island in the 1950s, have since made their way to supermarkets nationwide. Our version of these popular rolls are pillowy-soft and lightly sweet thanks to pineapple juice and brown sugar.

The success of “We Have The Meats” can be attributed as much to ironic tone of the advertising, not taking itself too seriously. It paid off with tons of free publicity when, Daily Show host Jon Stewart made the chain the butt of many jokes over the years, and Arby's played along.

In 1964, the chain and its brown hat logo greeted potential customers for the first time in Boardman, Ohio. Then, after a period, the trademark underwent some retooling. Despite the updates, the Arby's logo still has its original taste and flavor. It's a modest red hat with the wordmark - Arby's below it.
