Any list of the best droids in the Star Wars Universe has to begin and end with R2-D2. From proving itself in The Phantom Menace as one of the most capable of its kind to help Luke Skywalker take down the Death Star in A New Hope, R2 has seen and done it all.

A new-model astromech, BB-8 served the Resistance in the years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, helping pilot Poe Dameron fly his X-wing. Together, Poe and BB-8 kept watch on the First Order.

Astromech and protocol droids were both given artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence was a form of technology that could be installed into droids to give them some degree of independent thought.

BB-8 appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker where, in mission with Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie and C-3PO on Pasaana eventually befriended a droid named D-O. Later followed them on Kef Bir and Exegol in the last war against Emperor Palpatine and the Sith Eternal.

The system uses omni wheels to make the sphere roll in any direction. Each of those wheels is connected to a motor. The robot uses sensors (gyroscopes and accelerometers) to determine its position and dynamics. The drive system can be maneuvered using a remote controller.

Binary. Binary, or Droidspeak, is made up of beeps and whistles. The language is “spoken” by droids such as R2-D2 and BB-8. In an early draft of the Star Wars script, R2-D2 speaks standard English.

So astromech droids like R2D2 seem to be as intelligent as most droids like C3PO, but they communicate with beeps. It would be much easier for Jedi to not learn to understand this beeping and just have them coded to speak normally.
