Bismuth subsalicylate, the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, is also available under the brand name Kaopectate.

This medicine is used for heartburn and acid reflux, indigestion, diarrhoea and feeling sick (nausea). It works by protecting your stomach and the lower part of your food pipe from stomach acid. It is also a mild antacid, which helps reduce too much stomach acid and eases any discomfort.

Pepto-Bismol has been used for a number of years to prevent travelers' diarrhea. Studies show that if adults take the equivalent of two tabs four times a day, it can decrease the incidence of travelers' diarrhea up to 60%. Now, many people who take that amount of Pepto-Bismol end up with severe constipation.

Pepto Bismol is used to treat diarrhea and symptoms associated with indigestion. Its active ingredient, bismuth subsalicylate, can cause your stool to turn black or gray. This side effect is harmless and temporary. Your stool color should return to normal within a couple days after you stop taking Pepto Bismol.

Pepto-Bismol is an OTC medicine used to treat upset stomach and diarrhea. It works by slowing down movement in your stomach and intestines and lowering the production of chemicals that irritate your stomach. It also stops diarrhea by helping your body reabsorb fluids, sodium (salt), and chloride.

Ingredients: Active is Bismuth Subsalicylate (526 mg in 30ml dose). Others: Aluminium Magnesium Silicate, Methylcellulose, Methyl Salicylate, Salicylic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Saccharin Sodium Salicylate, Amaranth and Water.

Pepto-Bismol is typically safe for most people, but avoid it if you have certain health conditions. Pepto-Bismol may make them worse. Don't take Pepto-Bismol if you: are allergic to salicylates (including aspirin or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and celecoxib)

Sometimes referred to as "the pink stuff," Pepto-Bismol is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication that is safe and effective for short-term use. Side effects are generally mild and can include a black tongue, black stool, and constipation. More serious side effects can occur but are rare.

For Pepto Chews:

1. Take two tablets every 30 minutes, or four tablets every 60 minutes as needed.
2. Chew or dissolve the tablets in your mouth.
3. Do not take more than eight doses (16 tablets) in 24 hours.
4. Stop taking this medication and see your doctor if diarrhea doesn't subside after 2 days.

For diarrhea or upset stomach: Adults and teenagers - The usual dose is 2 tablets every half-hour to one hour. You should not take more than 16 tablets in twenty-four hours. Children - Should not be used in children younger than 12 years of age.

When will I feel better? Pepto-Bismol should work within 30 to 60 minutes. You can have another dose after 30 to 60 minutes, if you need to. You can take up to 8 doses in 24 hours.

Avoid Pepto Bismol if you take aspirin regularly. It is not advisable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Children under 12 years of age should not take salicylate products due to an increased risk for Reye's Syndrome.

The Pepto Bismol website recommends taking:

1. One 30 ml dose every 30 minutes as needed for stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, and indigestion.
2. One 30 ml dose every 30 minutes or two doses every hour for diarrhea or traveler's diarrhea.

Who may not be able to take Pepto-Bismol

1. ever had an allergic reaction to bismuth subsalicylate or any of the other ingredients in Pepto-Bismol or Pepti Calm.
2. ever had an allergic reaction to aspirin or any other medicine.
3. diabetes.
4. gout.

You can take Pepto-Bismol for up to 2 days. Do not take it for more than 2 days as this will increase your risk of getting side effects. If your symptoms are no better or are getting worse after 2 days, contact your doctor.
