July 2011 Second generation. In July 2011, Roku unveiled its second generation of players, branded as Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS. All three models include 802.11n, and also add microSD slots and Bluetooth. The XD and XS support 1080p, and only the XS model includes an Ethernet connector and USB port.

All Roku streaming players will work for any television with an HDMI connection, so any Roku player can be connected to a 4K or HDR-compatible television. However, to stream movies and TV shows in 4K or HDR you will need a compatible Roku streaming player and television that supports 4K or HDR.

Here's how you can stream content on Roku offline through an external or local source: Roku usually has a USB port and slot for an SD card where you can insert a USB stick or SD card. Some features are accessible without an internet connection on Roku, and there are some ways to use Roku without an internet connection. The most notable things the Roku can do without an internet connection include: Streaming content from local or external storage like USB sticks and SD cards.

Roku streaming players and Roku TVs need Internet access to stream content. They use wireless to connect to your home network, or you can choose a model that offers a wired Ethernet connector. What type of Internet connection do I need?
