Two dogs named Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) and Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet) get separated from their owner when out for a walk. The film chronicles their journey back home. This is clearly aimed at kids but has plenty of humor that adults will enjoy.

The film features a positive theme of teamwork among the animals, as well as some comedic scenes, including a small dog using a blender to massage his back and tummy. “The Secret Life of Pets” reveals the pets have a lot more going on with them than their owners would realize, once the owners have left the house.

Max (Chris Renaud) is a spoiled terrier who enjoys a comfortable life in a New York building until his owner adopts Duke, a giant and unruly canine. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that's bound for the pound. Luckily, a rebellious bunny named Snowball swoops in to save the doggy duo from captivity. Newfoundland mix Duke is the deuteragonist of The Secret Life of Pets and a major character in The Secret Life of Pets 2. He is an Newfoundland mix adopted by Katie, making him Max's roommate/"good friend" and also his new brother.

The early 2000s saw the creation of many new cute breeds, including the Teddy Bear dog. Teddy Bears are a mix of the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds so each littler may look different from each other. Like other designer dog breeds, this is because Teddy Bear puppies gain different traits from each parent.
