The CRF450X and CRF450RX are Honda's latest offerings in the 450cc four-stroke off-road market, and despite their similar designations and appearances, they are two very different animals. They are both off-road bikes, sure, but that's about it.

2005 First offered in 2005, the CRF450X shares very little with the CRF450R motocrosser. The CRF450X has seen massive success in the Baja 1000, seeing 11 victories and another 5 wins in the Baja 500.

The 2023 Honda CRF450X is essentially the same as it was in 2019 when introduced with an all-new design. The 2005–2017 carbureted models had their time in the sun, and remain loved by many to this day. But Honda knew it had to surpass this proven platform and did so with the complete overhaul in 2019.

The only changes the CRF450RX has is a Dunlop MX33 front tire (stock is a Dunlop AT81), and Pro Taper CR Mid Contour Handlebars (stock is a Renthal 839 Fatbar). Aside from that, the 450RX is left stock with just clicker and sag adjustments made. The CRF450X is 100% stock with just clicker and sag adjustments made.

Having six speeds in the CRF450X's transmission compared to an MX bike's typical five gives you more choice, and makes this versatile bike even more versatile. You have a gear for everything from east-coast rock crawling to wide-open Baja blasts.

The bike's top speed, we estimate, is around 90 mph.

Values

Our bike averages between 34-40 MPG for most of the 1500-miles we have on it. At just over two gallons we felt safe on 70-mile stints with the low fuel light coming on for the last few miles. Since most of our rides stretch this range a little between gas stops we installed a larger IMS tank (from our CRF450L).

Hitting the scales at 275 pounds, the 2022 Honda CRF450X is no lightweight - it's 24 pounds heavier than the RX - and the nearly 38-inch seat height puts you far above the dirt.
